Ascend Solar didn’t start in a boardroom. It started with a question: why should millions of homes and businesses across East Africa remain at the mercy of an unreliable grid, paying more every year for less? We were built to answer that question — permanently.

Our journey

2014 — The beginning

Founded with a van and a vision

Edwin Njeru pooled his savings and founded Ascend Solar out of a deep frustration — watching small businesses and families lose thousands of shillings to power cuts and rising KPLC bills. He believed solar wasn't a luxury — it was the practical, affordable answer. With two technicians, a secondhand van, and a determination to do things properly, Ascend installed its first 12 residential systems in Nairobi.

2016

First commercial contract — and proof of scale

A 60 kWp installation at a mid-sized manufacturing facility in Athi River became Ascend's first major commercial project. Completing it on time and under budget — while the client stayed fully operational — earned a reputation that no marketing could have built. Commercial referrals began flowing within months.

2020

500 installations — and a team of 60

Despite a difficult year globally, Ascend reached 500 completed installations and expanded to a team of 60 full-time engineers, technicians, and support staff. The company launched its in-house training programme — believing that skills built locally stay locally, and that the solar transition Kenya needs requires a generation of trained professionals.

Today

1,800 installations. 47 MW. Still growing.

With over 1,800 completed installations, 120 team members, and 47 megawatts of clean power running across homes, businesses, schools, and hospitals — Ascend Solar is the most trusted solar company in Kenya. The mission hasn't changed since day one: make clean, reliable energy accessible to every home and business that needs it. We're not done yet.
